Storm Smart 2022 End of Hurricane Season Celebration and Burning of the Hurricane Flags serves as both a community Salute to our First Responders and Rescue Heroes, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian; and provides an opportunity for our hospitality community to let visitors know Downtown Fort Myers is open for business.

Organized by Storm Smart Team Member, John McEnroe, the Storm Smart 2022 End of Hurricane Celebration is sponsored in part by the City of Fort Myers, Beasley Media Group, Waterman Broadcasting NBC Channel 2, Eastern Architectural Systems, Spiro & Associates, Crowther Roofing & Cooling, and members of the Lee County business community.

History of the Ceremonial Burning of the Hurricane Flags

The first End of Hurricane Season Celebration & Ceremonial Burning of the Hurricane Flags was held in Key West, Florida on NOV 30, 2005, after the Florida Keys suffered eight hurricanes within two years.

Andy Newman, Newman PR (agency of record for the Monroe County TDC) was looking for publicity to remind tourists from around the world Key West and The Florida Keys survived with minimal damage, and please come visit, asked Julie McEnroe, Pirates in Paradise Festival organizer, to include the event in their 10 day festival. And so the tradition began.

This NOV 30th, marks Key West and the Conch Republic's 17th Annual Official End of America's Hurricane Season and Burning of the Hurricane Flags Ceremony, at the USCG Ingham Museum Ship Dock, Truman Waterfront. (A portion of proceeds raised from the event will benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank of SW Florida.)
